5 Tips for Adjusting Your Hearing Aids

How to Adjust to Your Hearing Aids

If you have recently been fitted for hearing aids, you might be going through an adjustment period while you learn to hear with them. Getting the most out of your hearing aids doesn’t happen immediately, so have patience with yourself during the first few months of using your devices. In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to help during the adjustment process.

Practice Listening with Your Hearing Aids

While they can be the best treatment for your hearing loss, you may have to put in some work before seeing the most benefit from your devices. In the first few months of working with your new hearing aids, there are listening exercises you can do to help yourself adjust. Practice by asking a friend or family member to make noise in different rooms of your house. Sit in one area, close your eyes, and try to identify which room each noise is coming from.

Start Good Cleaning Habits

Practicing good hygiene habits right from the start will set you up for success over the lifespan of your hearing aids. Letting your hearing aids get dirty can actually impact the quality of your hearing, so be sure to handle them with clean hands and in a clean space. Regularly change your wax filter so you don’t run into an excessive buildup of earwax and keep your hearing aids away from pets and children as these are common culprits for damage.

Use Looping Systems

Now that you have hearing aids, you may have access to better assistance in public settings like looping system technology. Looping systems provide wireless signals to your hearing aids when they’re in the “T” setting. This can help filter out background noises in places like theaters, conference rooms, auditoriums, and places of worship.

Communicate with Your Hearing Care Provider

As you learn to use your hearing aids, it’s important to keep in touch with your hearing care provider. If something doesn’t feel comfortable, or you don’t feel like you’re hearing has improved, let your provider know. They can help you make adjustments or even give you advice on how to help yourself get used to hearing with your device.

Utilize the people and the systems available to you to make your life with hearing aids easier. By forming good habits and having open discussions with your provider now, your journey to hearing better will be much smoother.
